Paschal Message from Patriarch KIRILL of Moscow and All Russia to Archpastors, Pastors, Deacons, Monastics and All Faithful Children of the Russian Orthodox Church

Paschal Message from Patriarch KIRILL of Moscow and All Russia to Archpastors, Pastors, Deacons, Monastics and All Faithful Children of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Beloved in the Lord archpastors, allhonourable presbyters and deacons, Godloving monks and nuns, dear brothers and sisters,

I address all of you, Orthodox Christians living in many countries of the world, who are now in churches or praying in your homes, to extend greetings to you on the great feast of Holy Pascha with my heart full of spiritual joy, and to proclaim victoriously in accord with the ancient tradition:

CHRIST IS RISEN!

It is in these very words that the Holy Church has been triumphantly proclaiming the glad tidings of the Godgiven salvation for two thousand years. In them is the fire of our faith, the strength of love, the foundation of hope, the cornerstone of the Church, the heart of the New Testament message to the world, the unfading light of enlightenment and the source of inspiration, the core of Christian life and our entire future.

Whatever happens in our everchanging, sometimes restless and conflicttorn world, whatever hardships and ordeals befall us, we know, believe and preach that the Paschal joy in the Risen Saviour remains unfailing and allvictorious.

What is the meaning of this greatest Christian feast? In the name of what and why did the Son of God come down to earth, take the form of a servant (Phil 2:7), endure sufferings, being crucified on the cross, and rise from the dead? And what do we, people of the 21st century, have to do in order to become true partakers and heirs of Christ’s victory over death?

The Church gives us answers to these questions, bearing witness that through the Son of God Who was incarnate of the Most Blessed Virgin hell is led captive, Adam is recalled from the dead, the curse is made void, Eve is set free, death is slain, and we are endowed with life (Sunday Theotokion, Stichera at the Praises, tone 2). Truly, the Lord quickens us by His love, delivers us from the fear of death and corruption, heals our spiritual and bodily infirmities, supports us in hardships and trials, comforts in afflictions and sorrows, and helps us follow the path of salvation leading to eternal life when God will wipe away every tear from [people’s] eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more (Rev 21:4).

Having performed the feat of redemption, through His sacrifice on the cross and glorious Resurrection the Lord opened the gates of heaven to everyone. From then on and to this day, every human being is given an opportunity to wholeheartedly embrace Christ as the true God and Saviour Who grants blessed strength for leading a life of righteousness and actively participating in the transfiguration of the world.

Reflecting on the feast of Easter, Saint Nicholas of Serbia, a prominent theologian of the past century, wrote, Christ is risen it means that life is stronger than death. Christ is risen it means that good is stronger than evil. Christ is risen it means that all difficulties in life are resolved (Thoughts on Good and Evil). And this Paschal joy, which is the joy of communion with God and of building up a new life (Rom 6:4) on the basis of goodness and justice, touches the hearts of millions of Christians, inspiring them to do works of charity and mercy, helping to overcome adversities, comforting them in ordeals, giving hope to the desperate and strengthening the fainthearted.

On the radiant feast of Pascha our special prayers are offered to God for people in combat zones. We as Christians cannot remain indifferent to the troubles and hardships of our brothers and sisters whose hearts are seared by the fire of internecine strife. So we lift up our fervent supplications unto the Lord that by His mercy and lovingkindness He may heal bodily and, above all else, spiritual wounds, give comfort in every sorrow and grant a lasting and just peace to the brotherly peoples that came from one Dnieper baptismal font.

The earthly life of the Saviour was full of labour and sacrificial love for people, and we are called to become like Him in serving our neighbours, since any, even the smallest virtue, every effort to overcome our own selfishness for the sake of another person, draws us closer to God the Source of life and immortality and therefore makes us happier.

May the Risen Lord Who in accord with His truthful promise abides with His followers even unto the end of the world (Mt 28:20) vouchsafe us, sinful and infirm, but thirsting for righteousness and seeking salvation, to inherit the blessed life after we complete our earthly journey, so that in the Heavenly mansions prepared… from the foundation of the world (Mt 25:34) we together with saints reign in His eternal glory (St Ambrose of Milan, Hymn “We Praise Thee, O God). This joyful anticipation of the Kingdom of love to come, of God being everything to every one (1 Cor 15:28) is what the Church preaches at all times and even more so in the radiant Easter season.

Let us hearken to the salvific voice of the Church calling us through the Holy Apostle Paul to celebrate Pascha not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth (1 Cor 5:8). Let us heed and try to live according to the Divine commandments, by the truth of the Gospel, our good deeds and our whole life bearing witness before those near and those far away that Christ is risen indeed, unto Whom are due all glory, honour and worship unto the ages of ages. Amen

A Deeper Look at the Russian Orthodox Community in Jakarta

Indonesia is a multicultural Southeast Asian country. In Indonesia, ethnic groupings, religions, community organizations, and other factors shape Indonesians’ sociocultural lives. Indonesia has six official faiths: Islam, Protestantism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism, as well as Aliran Kepercayaan, a covering word for Indonesian folk religions recognized by the Indonesian government. Have you ever thought about the presence of Eastern Orthodox Christianity in Indonesian religious life?

That’s how you’ll feel if you visit the St. Thomas Orthodox Church (Gereja Ortodoks Santo Thomas Rasul), a Russian Orthodox church that is an autocephalous branch of the Eastern Orthodox Christian church. It is located on Jalan K. H. Mohammad Syafi’i Hadzami No. 1, Jakarta, near to Gandaria City, a well-known mall in South Jakarta. This building’s position is partly obscured from view because there is no sign indicating that it is a Christian church.

baptismal-font

Before entering the main place of worship, you will see a baptismal font, which is usually found in a Christian church. However, in this church, we will see a baptismal font with a carpet hanging with Arabic inscriptions. It reads, ابانا (Ābānā) or Our Father in Arabic. As it turned out, this carpet was an ornament and Arabic calligraphy of the Our Father’s Prayer was chosen as the ornament, as explained by Fransiskus Asissi Eko Sugiono, a young Eastern Orthodox activist in Indonesia.

At the entry, you will be given a veil to wear next to the door. The veil is an essential feature of Eastern Orthodox women’s devotion. The Orthodox veiling custom, according to Daud Alexander Fujisaki, a young Eastern Orthodox activist, is a type of adherence to what the Bible commands.

kerudung

In the building of worship, you will be treated to a golden and full view of the Eastern Orthodox iconostasis, which clearly gives a majestic impression and reminds us of the sights of Eastern Orthodox Christianity in Russia, the place of origin of this Christian sect. Some of the existing Eastern Orthodox icons were imported directly from Russia.

cross_1

Eastern Orthodox church services are frequently held in this structure. In terms of worship, Orthodox Christians vary from Indonesia’s mainstream Christianity, Protestantism and Catholicism. Apart from worship events, here is where many academics or members of other religions come to remain in contact, experience firsthand the lives of Orthodox Christians in Indonesia, or inquire about academic study resources for theology students.

Eko-sugiono_1

According to young Eastern Orthodox congregations, the majority of the congregation in this church, roughly 90% of them, are converts, with the exception of children born to Orthodox Christian parents who converted first. St. Thomas Church’s congregation is similarly varied, with members from numerous ethnic groups including Javanese, Chinese, Ambonese, and even Arabs. This is represented in multiple inscriptions on the ceiling encircling the image of Jesus Christ in the congregation’s various languages.

Despite their modest population in Indonesia, they live in peace and have no conflicts with other people. Orthodox Christians have succeeded in contributing to Indonesia’s diversity.

Metropolitan Sergiy of Singapore and South-East Asia to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia on the anniversary of his enthronement

To His Holiness KIRILL,

Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia

 Your Holiness Vladyka

and Gracious Father!

Please accept my sincere congratulations on the next anniversary of your Patriarchal enthronement.

Fourteen years ago, the Lord the Heart-knower assigned you to govern the Russian Orthodox Church. All these years, with a strong hope in His almighty help, with humility and dedication, you have been carrying the difficult cross of the Patriarchate, calling on pastors to be true soldiers of Christ and for the flock to stand firm in the Orthodox faith, to place hope in the Saviour and try to act according to His holy commandments.

The serious trials that our people are going through today and troubles in church life have not weakened you: “the God of all grace…perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you (1 Pet. 5:10). Your courage and fearlessness, steadfastness and determination inspire us, your co-workers, to firmly defend the ideals of the Gospel and to perform our service with even greater zeal.

On this important day for the whole church fullness, on my own behalf, on behalf of the clergy and laity of the Patriarchal Exarchate of South-East Asia, I wish you, Your Holiness, good health and spiritual vigor, joy and abundant help from God in the Primatial Ministry.

With filial love in the Lord,

YOUR HOLINESS’

unworthy humble obediencer,

SERGIY

Metropolitan of Singapore and South-East Asia,

Metropolitan Sergiy Headed Joint Service of Archpastors of Patriarchal Exarchate of South-East Asia in the Church of Life-Giving Trinity in Ostankino, Moscow

On January 29, the 33rd Sunday after Pentecost, the feast of the Veneration of the Honourable Chains of the Apostle Peter, the Patriarchal Exarch of South-East Asia, Metropolitan Sergiy of Singapore and South-East Asia led the Divine Liturgy in the Church of the Life-Giving Trinity in Ostankino in Moscow.

His Eminence was co-served by Metropolitan Pavel of Manila and Hanoi, Archbishop Theophylact of Pyatigorsk and Circassia, Archbishop Theophan of Korea, Bishop Pitirim of Jakarta, and the clergy of the Church of the Life-Giving Trinity in Ostankino.

At the end of the divine service, Metropolitan Sergiy congratulated the faithful on the Sunday and addressed them with his archpastoral word:

“Your Eminences, dear fathers, brothers, and sisters. I am pleased to welcome you on this Sunday, which prepares us for Great Lent. We can already smell the spiritual spring coming.

Today, I gladly performed a joint divine service with vladykas, with co-workers in the lands of South-East Asia and the lands of the Caucasus.

I cordially greet vladyka Theophylact, who labours in the North Caucasus in the Kabardino-Balkar and Karachay-Cherkess republics. He is the administrator of the Baku and Pyatigorsk dioceses and parishes of the Patriarchal Deanery in Turkmenistan.

Vladyka Pavel, who heads Orthodox parishes in the Philippine-Vietnamese diocese, where there are already thirty-three parishes. Vladyka Theophan, who heads the Diocese of Korea, which includes the countries of North and South Korea. In these lands, vladyka Theophan unites our compatriots, Orthodox believers, on the Korean Peninsula.

Today, we also prayed with vladyka Pitirim, vicar of the Singapore diocese, which includes parishes in Indonesia, whose population is about 300 million people living in a territory 20 times smaller than the territory of Russia. Also, today Archimandrite Oleg, the organizer of parishes in the Thai diocese, where eleven churches have already been built, shared with us the joy of common prayer.
If 15 years ago someone had told me that Orthodoxy would flourish in Asia, which seems far away for us, I would not have believed it, but today the Patriarchal Exarchate of South-East Asia includes more than 80 parishes. All this is by the mercy of God and by the works, cares, and prayers of the bishops and other people working for the Exarchate.

God never makes mistakes. If a person sincerely believes that God leads everything in our lives, then he is able to see that through our life experience and sometimes even pain and state of forsakenness, the Lord leads each of us along our own path.”
